It’s a wrap

Regretfully this will be my last post at Vienna’s Classic Hollywood. I’ve had 12 years of enjoyable research and writing about Classic Hollywood.

It’s always been a pleasure to hear from fans and to follow other bloggers, but now seems the right time to hang up my pen , sit back , put the dvd player on and pick a film off the shelf.

In between movies, I’ll be checking  out my favourite bloggers – Laura……Colin…….Karen……Mike…..Aurora……Theresa. All great writers who will always keep the memories of bygone Hollywood alive.

I’m active on Instagram, still under Vienna’s Classic Hollywood.

My thanks  to everyone who has contributed comments over the years. We’ve  had some good discussions.

To my sister, Vi, sorry I didn’t get round to writing about Cornel Wilde and Dale Robertson , but here’s two pictures for you.

My best to everyone,

Carol (aka Vienna)

A mistake in my very last post! It’s been ten years since I started the blog, not 12.

And remember, we’ll always have

  1. I’m very sad to see you stepping away from blogging, I’ve always enjoyed visiting this site. Should you decide to return to the land of blog at any time in the future, your readers will still be here.
Anyway, thanks for all the stimulating posts over the last dozen years and best wishes for the future.

  2. 12 years is a long time. Many happy memoirs and much enjoyment in that time. You will always love classic movies and write about them. There is always a classic waiting to be found. So keep searching.

  3. So sorry to read that you’re calling it a day with this blog, I’ve been following for yeas and I’ve always found something interesting on it even though I may not always have commented. But you’ve done very well with it. Put your feet up now and have a well deserved rest. All the Best from David Rayner.

  4. I am going to miss you very much; you have one of the best film blogs online. I shall content myself with going back to previous posts-12 years should keep me busy. I do wish you the very best for the future and the endeavors you may pursue. And yes, should you decide to return, we will welcome you back with open arms.

  5. Carol(aka Vienna), say it isn’t so. I’ve really enjoyed your wonderful write-ups and your choice in photographs used for those write-ups. Also, the good discussions that I’ve enjoyed. I will miss you.

I wish you the best in everything in the future. Thank you.

    • Walter, you’ve been a great supporter and I will miss your comments , but I ‘m sure we’ll both be in discussions on other blogs. I’ll watch out for you!

  6. Sad news but your blog has had a good innings! I’ve been there from the start and always enjoyed your take on classic Hollywood. Good luck in any future projects.

  7. Sorry to read that you’re not continuing the blog. I’ve enjoyed all of your columns immensely even if I haven’t commented. Best of luck with your future plans. Wishing you health & good watching going forward.
    Cheers,
    Icewineanne

  8. I only recently followed your blog so this news saddens me.

May I say that this blog should have ten x’s the followers. I, too, have blogged for a number of years so I understand that you put your heart and soul into this content.

The blogosphere is a strange environment what with all the algorithms and such that direct readers to your blog. WordPress and Blogger, for example, have not delivered on my expectations. I do wonder if blogging is even worth my time.

I wanted to share with you that I just watched “Made for Each Other” (1939) starring Carole Lombard, James Stewart and Charles Coburn. It’s probably a 3-star movie although it lost money at the box office.

If I may share a tip with your readers, I browse through the menu (Genre>Classics) and discover quite a few old films on the free streaming platform Tubi.

In the words of Roger Ebert, “I’ll see you at the movies.”

    • Glad you enjoyed “Made For Each Other.”
Hadn’t heard of Tubi- it’s not available in the U.K. Looks interesting.
Yes, see you at the movies! Good luck.

      • I believe that UK/EU viewers need a VPN to stream Tubi — which defeats the purpose of “free” streaming although the cost of a VPN is far less than a paid service.

Tubi is owned by Fox and Pluto is owned by CBS/Paramount. Pluto, I believe, is available in the UK. There are hundreds of channels to stream including On Demand. I recently watched “Houseboat” (1958) starring Cary Grant and Sophia Loren, and “The Desperate Hours” (1955) starring Humphrey Bogart and Frederic March.

For me, it’s the most cost-effective way to watch movies although I really miss TCM. I would pay just to stream TCM. Before the launch of HBO Max, Criterion and TCM streamed their content on a paid service called FilmStruck.

FilmStruck premiered in 2016, and cost about $7 (US). It was canceled upon the introduction of HBO Max in 2018. HBO Max presents only a very few TCM classics so it has been quite disappointing.

Criterion revived FilmStruck as The Criterion Channel. While it does feature a few TCM titles, it focuses mostly on independent films. It costs about $11 (US), but is not available in the UK.

  9. So I looked up your Instagram but I can’t see the posts because I don’t have an account. Gauging by the follower count, it looks as if it’s a more engaging platform than blogging — but why doesn’t Facebook allow public viewing? (I don’t have a Facebook account, either.)

  10. Just heard the great news regarding the Anna May Wong set from Kino which certainly put me on a high and now this news has sent me crashing down to earth.
Although I don’t comment much I’ve always enjoyed checking in at this wonderful blog with those superb photo galleries.
At least there are still some excellent DVD & Blu Ray releases of classic movies and long may it continue.
I hope you will still comment over at Colin’s and Laura’s and with every best wish for the future.

    Thanks for the memories……………

    • Hi, John. No doubt we will meet up again over at the High Country or Laura’s Musings.
As you say, we are lucky at present with disc releases.

  11. Vienna, I was so very sorry to hear this as I’m one of many who has enjoyed your blog for years – even when I don’t comment I visit frequently! Have loved your thoughts and all the beautiful photos. As Colin said, should you return we will be here ready to read!

In the meantime, I will hope to see you here and at our other favorite blogs. You’re an important part of the classic film community!

    Best wishes,
    Laura

    • Lovely to hear from you ,Laura. I love being part of the classic film community and will continue to look in on your blog every day. I look forward to hearing about the next TCM Festival.

      • Thank you so much, Vienna, for your support and faithful readership in addition to the pleasure you’ve provided via your own blog!

        Best wishes,
        Laura

    • Hi Laura, I sent you an email through the contact address on your blog. Just wanted you to know it was me. I forgot to mention, with regards to your interest in old westerns, that the CineVault Western channel on Tubi streams classic westerns from Columbia’s library — everything from the B-roll Durango Kid series to A-listers like Randolph Scott and Glenn Ford.

      • Thank you, David! I will check my email a bit later and respond. I appreciate the Tubi info – I was just asking my husband what he knew about Tubi yesterday as other than the name it’s unfamiliar to me. I will look into it more as it sounds like they have things I would enjoy. Appreciate the info!

        Best wishes,
        Laura

      • It’s interesting, too, that Columbia would rent outdoor locations — Warner Brothers ranch, for example — for the production of its studio westerns. In the email, I mentioned that half of the western sets at Warner’s ranch were destroyed by fire in 1970.

  12. Sorry to learn that you are hanging up your pen. I have enjoyed reading your blogs over the years.

With beat wishes for the future.

  13. vienna/Carol,

    LUV’d, LUV’d, LUV’d all of your posts!

Thank you for the many pictures, stories, and gossip of yore.

You have done an outstanding job.

  14. Oh, Carol — you know I am so sad to see you go. I don’t even know what to say . . . except that I hope you’ll miss blogging and come back to give us 10 more years of your enjoyable, entertaining, and informative posts! In the meantime, I wish you the best of everything.

  15. Hi Wee Sister
Thanks for ending your last post with lovely pictures of my favourite Hollywood Hunks in my teenage years. You have been listening to my pleas!
You’ve often said I introduced you to going to the Pictures when you were very young. As a much older sister who did not like going to the local cinemas unaccompanied I can remember pressing you or more likely bribing you to accompany me on my two or three times per week visits to the cinema. We had so many cinemas to choose from in Glasgow then.
I’m so glad your interest in the cinema started then and had continued through the years. That and your writing ability has given so much pleasure to us all as you can tell from the comments.
    All my love
    Vi.

    • Hi, Vi
So it’s all your fault getting me hooked on the movies! I do remember reading your copies of Picture Show and PictureGoer magazines.
Thanks for all your support over the years.
      Love to my big sis

  16. Sorry to hear this Carol. You’ve made a lot of folk very happy with your blog.
I was a late comer but really enjoyed reading the content.
All the best to you in the future and keep taking those dvds off the shelf.
    John H

  17. I had a feeling before Xmas that this might be coming, no idea why. Thanks for your many entertaining blogs. Sad that otherwise we have no contact after knowing you for over 60 years, but that’s life! All the best for the future. Jim.

  18. So sorry to hear that you are leaving! I really hope you change your mind. In any even, many thanks for so many great posts. You will be sorely missed by everyone. Wishing you godspeed!
