CLASSIC NEWS. 5

…………….Sounds fun. The SILVER SCENES blog (http://silverscenesblog.blogspot.co.uk) is hosting a Blogathon in November 2016, with the theme that you look into your crystal ball and conjure up an imaginary film, at the studio of your choice and the classic cast of your choice.

The possibilities are endless and I look forward to reading what folks come up with.

……………PARAMOUNT, CITY OF DREAMS is the new book by Steven Bingen who wrote the marvellous “MGM, Hollywood’s Greatest Backlot.”

It’s 288 pages, and promises a virtual tour of Paramount with plenty of rare stills.

Seems strange that the launch date is 31 December,2016. It would have been ideal for a Christmas present.

Paramount is the last big name studio still active in Hollywood. It absorbed the adjacent RKO studio backlot in 1967.

The studio has a daily two-hour tour.

Some shots of the famous Paramount logo and gates.

The wrought iron entry gate was built in 1926 and is located at the north end of Bronson Avenue – it became known as the Bronson Gate.

I think that’s William Holden walking towards the gate in “Sunset Boulevard”.

M

The entrance had a belfry on top of the gate until 1936 when it was removed for safety reasons.

A new double arched gate has been built and dubbed the Melrose Gate. I understand the two gates are close to each other . Of course it’s the Bronson Gate which has all the memories.

…………Bonhams   in New York are holding a sale of the estate of MAUREEN O’HARA on 29 November,2016.

Everything from furniture, clothes, jewellery, personal correspondence , and lots of Hollywood related items.

M

It all seems rather sad, firstly that the collection will be split up, and secondly that so many personal items collected over a lifetime are going under the hammer.

You can view much of what is being sold at http://www.bonhams.com/ohara

(The TCM auction the following day is also full of fascinating collectors’ items including scripts, posters, photos, costumes. A JUDY GARLAND  ‘Dorothy’ blouse and pinafore is listed at $100,000 to $150,000 .)
