ALSO STARRING…..FORTY BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAYS ON THE GREATEST CHARACTER ACTORS OF HOLLYWOOD’s GOLDEN ERA. 1930-1965″ (Bear Manor Media, 2012) by Cynthia and Sara Brideson.

An impressive tribute to 40 of Hollywood’s greatest character performers, with lots of detail, full filmographies and good photographs. I don’t know how long it took the sisters Brideson to write this book (almost 500 pages) ,but their excellent research tells us so much about the lives of people like Thomas Mitchell, Mary Wickes, Gladys Cooper, Edward Everett Horton, James Gleason,Eve Arden to name a few. Lots of great dialogue quotes too.

Of course we could easily add another 40, and who knows, maybe the authors are already working on a second volume!
A fascinating read. A labour of love,I’m sure.

Of the 40 actors, my only quibble would be including Joan Blondell,Claude Rains and Shelley Winters as supporting players.image

  1. Never heard of this book but I’m going to see if I can track it down. All those great character and supporting players added so much to the movies – the life blood of the pictures in many ways.

  2. It’s well worth a read.
It’s good that these great character actors are being recognised and written about. As you say, the life blood of the movies back then.
It’s great fun to be able to identify them without looking up the cast lists!

  3. Hi! I’m Sara Brideson, one of the authors. My sister and I are so glad you enjoyed our book. It took us about one year and three months to write it. It was a lot of fun! The reason we chose Claude Rains, Shelley Winters, and Joan Blondell as supporting players was because in their later careers, they had to take character parts. We know they began as leading players. We put them in there mainly to get more interest in the book too, since they’re better known. We wold like to write apart two, but the first one didn’t really sell that well, s we’re not sure we will. Our second book will be some time this year. It’s a biography of Florenz Ziegfeld. Thanks again for spotlighting our book!

  4. Great to hear from you,Sara. I do hope a part two does happen.
I look forward to your book on Ziegfeld. He produced my favorite musical, Show Boat.
